University College, Thiruvananthapuram, was established in 1866 by the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma. It began as part of the Raja’s Free School, started in 1834 by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal to provide English education. In 1866, it was upgraded to a full-fledged college named H.H. The Maharaja’s College. The first principal was John Ross, a noted scholar. Over the decades, the college has grown to become one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in India, with a rich tradition of academic excellence and social contribution.

Facilities:

Library: The college library has a vast collection of around 1.5 lakh books and subscribes to various journals and newspapers. It also provides access to thousands of e-journals and e-books, along with internet browsing and an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

IT Infrastructure: The campus is equipped with modern IT infrastructure to support teaching and learning.

Cafeteria: A canteen is available on campus offering food and refreshments to students and staff.

The college has been recognized by the University Grants Commission as a "College with Potential for Excellence" and is also identified as a heritage institution by the Government of Kerala.

In national rankings, the college has consistently ranked among the top institutions in India. It secured the 23rd rank in the NIRF India Rankings 2020 among colleges.
